AKC Breed-Size Formula

The simple "multiply by 7" rule ignores that dogs age quickly in year one (reaching sexual maturity equivalent to a ~15-year-old human) and then slow down. The AKC-recommended logarithmic formula adjusts for this and for breed size.

Different sizes, different clocks: small breeds often live 15–20 years; giant breeds average 8–10 years.

Small (<20 lbs)Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu
Medium (20–50 lbs)Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Border Collie, Bulldog, Basenji
Large (50–90 lbs)Labrador, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Husky, Boxer
Giant (>90 lbs)Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Mastiff, Newfoundland, Irish Wolfhound
